RIBA Client Adviser

We provide strategic advice to successful projects and are registered with the RIBA for Client Adviser services.

The success of a building project depends crucially on its client. For all but the most experienced clients, the strength of their advisers is vital.  Clients need the skills of:

  • Setting up a decisive client team
  • Knowing how the project will create the outcomes required
  • Knowing how to take the project to market
  • Being able to communicate with the supply chain
  • Sponsoring the project from inception to completion

As Client Adviser we can raise your effectiveness in each of these areas.  The value of strategic advice is very high, but costs a tiny fraction of the value created.

The tradition of early input by the architect is changing as clients more often choose an integrated design and build team. Now it is appropriate to seek independent advisers for the essential front-end work, to help make the business case, organise the client function, prove feasibility and support through the process of selecting the team and developing the design solution.

Ruth Butler is accredited by the RIBA as a Client Adviser to meet these needs.

Ruth has extensive experience as a Client Adviser, working with a number of local authorities including Greenwich Council and Wandsworth Council on their Building Schools for the Future programme.  Ruth also has specialist Sports/Leisure and Health sector experience and is a current member of Design Council CABE’s Built Environment Experts panel.  She has been an adviser to Partnership for Schools (PfS) Sports/PE Steering Group, helping to write their ‘Fit for the Future’ document.

It is one of the most mature projects that Building Schools for the Future produced, in no small part down to having a strong client.

I found the Client Advisor [Ruth Butler] very useful in translating the local authority’s procurement procedures into reality. Having the CA as part of our design group, helping us to challenge design presentations has been very valuable…
